Meet Shirley
Client since 2002
Shirley came to Neuro Connection over 18 years ago after suffering a stroke while on her OE in Greece at just 45 years old. It was 4 February 1998 when she had to be helicoptered off the island to reach the nearest hospital.
Referred by her physiotherapist and through a family connection to staff, Shirley arrived at Neuro Connection moving slowly, speaking in a whisper, and fully paralysed on her left side. She relied heavily on her family and lacked the skills and confidence to live independently.
Over time - and with quiet determination - Shirley began “to pick up the pace again.” She now travels from the North Shore twice a week and proudly says, “I live on my own.”
Her voice has grown stronger too - even if, as she puts it, she’s still “a little on the quiet side.”
“The conductors are excellent at understanding ability levels and providing that gentle push when we don’t have the confidence.”
She’s made strong friendships in class that keep her motivated, and she says, “I also sleep much better these days too, which is a sure win for anyone!”
Although still paralysed to a degree on her left side — mostly her left arm — Shirley now walks unaided, speaks with ease, and continues to be an active part of the Neuro Connection whānau.
“I would come more if it were closer.”
As for where she might have ended up without this service - she doesn’t want to think about it. These days, Shirley walks out the door with confidence and a “go get ’em” attitude.
